Counting Coppers - Purple copper butterfly

Bathurst regional, Lithgow city

The purple copper butterfly is an endangered species found on the Central Tablelands of NSW and very recently within Namadgi National Park, ACT. This species lives in a very specific habitat only occurring above approximately 850 m in elevation and with a specific plant, the native blackthorn and an ant species. The ant and the butterfly have a special symbiotic relationship which both species benefit from this relationship. The Counting Coppers project aims to record sightings of the butterfly during its’ flying season each spring with an easy to use app.
